MANCHESTER — The Franklin Pierce baseball team used three different pitchers to hold off top seed Southern N.H. for a 3-2 upset win Tuesday in the first round of the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament.
The Ravens (24-21) now advance to the double-elimination part of the tournament, scheduled Thursday through Saturday. The Penmen (36-12) are eliminated from the conference tourney, though they are still expected to earn an at-large berth to the NCAA tournament.
Danny Gracia started and pitched 4.2 innings Tuesday, giving up two earned runs on four hits and one walk; Evan Glew earned the win with 3.2 shutout innings of relief, giving up one hit and striking out six; and Zach Hart picked up the save after giving up one hit and striking out one.
Franklin Pierce scored its first run in the first inning, on a Brad Roberto (2-for-4) single through the left side that brought in Joel Lara (2-for-5). In the third, a Jonel Ozuna (0-for-3) sacrifice fly to center scored Roberto, and in the fourth, Dylan Jones (2-for-4) scored the crucial third run with a solo home run to left-center.
The Ravens totaled 10 hits, including eight off SNHU starter Jake Walkinshaw, the most the graduate student pitcher has given up in a single appearance in his collegiate career.
