Winning moves

Members of the High Voltage team earned one of only three all-expenses-paid bids to nationals in Florida in April.

Two Northern Lights All Stars teams recently returned home from the Athletic Cheer Championships with bid declarations to compete at the 2019 D2 Summit Cheerleading Championships in April at the ESPN Center in Orlando, Fla.

The weekend-long event, held at the Rhode Island Convention Center, hosted 100-plus teams and thousands of athletes.

Every year, teams from around the United States compete to earn a bid to the D2 Summit, the pinnacle competition for Division II All-Star Cheer teams hosted by Varsity All Star.

The D2 Summit bids are awarded to the teams that perform the very best combination of excellent technique, highly executed difficulty, and unique choreography. There are two types of bid declarations: paid bid or an at-large bid. A full paid bid, the most difficult to get, is exactly what is implied in the name. Teams who receive these bids get the privilege of competing at the D2 Summit with all of their expenses paid. Full paid bids are awarded to only the highest scoring teams at the largest and most prestigious competitions throughout the season.

The local High Voltage team, competing at Youth Level 1, earned an all-expenses-paid bid, one of only three such bids from the entire competition.

True Blue, at Junior Level 2, received one of six at-large bids. The team is led by captains Kayleigh Stickney, Jasmine Benavides, Ava Lucius and Nataleigh McKeen.

Six Northern Lights squads competed, earning five first-place finishes, one runner-up finish and grand champion showing, for D2 Level 1. And, the two bids to Florida.
