Taylor Simpson, a former Franklin Pierce University player, earned medalist honors Wednesday in a State-Am qualifier at Bretwood Golf Course in Keene.
Now playing out of the Oaks Golf Links in Somersworth, Simpson had the lone sub-par round of the day, a 1-under 71 on the South Course, which played at 6,400 yards.
The State-Am is next month at Portsmouth Country Club beginning July 8. The qualifier was the fourth of six that will set the field for that weeklong event.
Simpson began his round with one birdie and eight pars, and picked up a second birdie at the shortish par 5 10th. Bogeys at No. 12 and No. 15 slowed his momentum, but only slightly. He got one of those lost shots right back at the par 3 16th.
Bretwood Golf Course members also had a strong showing in the qualifying field as five advanced. They are: Macky Seppala, Mike Davis, Hunter Drew, Nick Nadeau and Izzy Avilez. Six other area players missed the cut, including Jalen Rines and Jim Robbins, who were a shot off the cut line.
Close behind Simpson were Jeff Monahan and Phil Smith, both traveling down from Green Meadow GC in Hudson; each shot 72.
Seppala had the best score among area players in the field, a 75, while Davis shot 76.
Eric Karlson and James Kinnunen of the Shattuck in Jaffrey shot 79 each to make next month’s field.
The final two qualifiers are June 25 at Eastman in Grantham and June 30 at Beaver Meadow in Concord.
Matt Paradis, the University of Southern New Hampshire standout, is the defending State-Am champion. He won last year at Hanover. His win broke back-to-back runner-up finishes, including at Bretwood in 2017.
