James A. Leavitt

James A. “Jim” Leavitt died suddenly and unexpectedly at his home on June 6, 2019.

Jim was born in Island Falls, Maine, on Aug. 9, 1946, the son of the late Herbert and Lucy (Patenaude) Leavitt. He grew up in Winchester. He graduated from Thayer High School in 1964. He was a machinist — lead man for Kingsbury Corp. in Keene, where he was employed for 42 years.

Jim was a loving and devoted husband to his wife of 41 years, Judyth (Willett) Leavitt. He was the proud father of three children, the late E6 Joseph A. Leavitt; his daughter, Shari, and her husband, David Herron, of Salt Lake City, Utah; and his youngest son, Joshua, and his wife, Rebecca (Sault) Leavitt, of Fitzwilliam. He was the adoring grandfather of six grandchildren who knew him as “Papa,” Tyler and Colton Herron; and Jessica, Beckett, Brennan and Joseph Leavitt. Jim is succeeded by his two sisters, Brenda and her husband, Robert Hubbard, of Warwick, Mass., and Kathleen and her husband, Neil Donald, of Winchester; and two brothers, Douglas and his wife, Dawn Leavitt, of Winchester and Thomas Leavitt of Jacksonville, Fla.

Jim was a quiet man who will be remembered by his family and friends as being a truly great man. He was a man who enjoyed being outside working on his hobbies. He was a master craftsman who loved making furniture and toys for his family. He enjoyed carpentry, mechanics and working with his hands. Jim’s quiet presence will be forever missed by those who knew and loved him. He came to us quietly on a warm summer’s day and left us on much the same way.

Public calling hours will be held on Wednesday, June 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Fletcher Funeral Home on Marlboro Street in Keene. Graveside services will be held Thursday, June 13, at 10 a.m. at the Evergreen Cemetery on Forest Lake Road in Winchester.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
