Ernest B. Perry

Ernest Byron Perry, 95, of West Swanzey, passed away on Dec. 30, 2018, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock in Keene, due to complications from pneumonia.

Ernest was born in West Swanzey on May 1, 1923, to Arthur and Valentene Naramore Perry. The car that was used to fetch the doctor for his birth (a 1914 Model T that his father bought new) has stayed in the family and was Ernest’s pride and joy. For many years he would participate in parades and car shows, and would give rides to children at school fairs; visitors to his home would be treated to rides through Swanzey and the covered bridges.

After graduating from Keene High School, he worked on his father’s farm, raising chickens, selling eggs, potatoes, corn and strawberries and delivering coal. Later he worked with his brother, David, in their Perry Brothers Oil company.

He was an unsung hero, volunteering on several boards including the Swanzey Historical Museum, Stratton Free Library and the Sidewalk Committee, on which he stayed active until this year.

He was an excellent carpenter and built his own home across the street from his birth place. He was fortunate to be able to remain living there with the help of his children until his recent hospitalization.

His wife of 69 years, Arlene Worcester Perry, passed away on Nov. 5, 2018; he is survived by his four children, Mark Perry, Judith Perry, Susan Ells and her husband, Jim, and Barbara Driscoll and her husband, Russell. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Aubrey (MacNeil) Brown and her husband, Arin, Brady J. Ells and Molly (Ells) Flint and her husband, Jeremy; and one great-granddaughter, Aurelia Brown.

Donations can be made in his memory to Hospice at HCS, P.O. Box 564, Keene, NH 03431 or the Swanzey Historical Museum, P.O. Box 416, West Swanzey, NH 03469

Services will be announced at a later date.
