CONCORD — “What happens after we leave South Vietnam is beyond our control,” Sen. Edmund S. Muskie, D-Maine, said this morning at a State House press conference. Muskie said that after American troops are withdrawn from Southeast Asia, the U.S. should not intervene in the political aftermath.

More than 750 competitors, representing 39 organizations in New England, will participate in the third annual New Hampshire Invitational open swim meet here over the weekend. The meet, which will include 48 age-group events, will take place at Keene State College’s six-lane pool.

BRATTLEBORO — The big orange roof — the one under which countless families have had a sit-down meal at the Howard Johnson’s restaurant in Brattleboro — is being replaced by Bickford’s red-and-white stripes.

PETERBOROUGH — They sure looked alike, but fire officials don’t think there’s a link between Monday’s fire that destroyed a vacant house on Route 136 and one that ruined another empty house on that road in November.
