Summer Tanager

Former Sentinel photographer Steve Hooper has captured his share of interesting and unique photos of birds in the wild over his long career. But this recent get — of a summer tanager — has been deemed a rare sighting by NH eBird and by New Hampshire Bird Records. The N.H. Audubon confirmed the species, Hooper said. The summer tanager, an American songbird, is the only completely red bird in North America, Hooper noted. He was lucky enough to catch not only the bird, but the bird with its favorite meal, a wasp. This species is often out of view. It forages high in trees and eats mostly insects and berries. The photo was taken in Keene in early May.
