BRATTLEBORO — A Brattleboro man was taken to the hospital with possible life-threatening injuries after a reported stabbing on Canal Street Tuesday night, police said.

Police were called to a home on Canal Street at about 5:15 p.m. and found Zachary T. Rutledge, 22, who appeared to have been stabbed, according to a news release from Brattleboro police.

Rutledge was taken to Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, police said, and his condition was not available this morning.

After investigating, police determined there was an altercation between Rutledge and Kenneth J. Craig, 44, a resident of the house, that involved a knife, according to the release. Both men were injured, but Craig did not go to the hospital, police said.

Another resident of the home, Chrisanna M. Gagne, 29, was arrested on an outstanding warrant and was held for lack of $10,000 bail, according to the release. Police did not say what the warrant was for.

Craig and Rutledge were both issued citations for assault, police said, with a court date of June 18 in the Windham Criminal Division of Vermont Superior Court.

Brattleboro police could not be reached this morning for more information on the incident.
