An iconic Keene retail store is closing because its owner says she’s retiring.

In 1984, Keene resident Margaret “Dilly” Trebilcock opened Dilly’s for Kids, a women’s clothing, baby and toy store, at the Colony Mill Marketplace. Eventually, she moved the storefront to its current location at 417 West St., adjacent to JC Penney and opposite Hannaford supermarket.

Trebilcock said the store will close when its lease expires Feb. 28, but the closure isn’t related to the store’s rent or the economy. Rather, she said, the store is doing well, and she “wanted to end on a high note” before retirement.

In retirement, Trebilcock said she plans on spending more time traveling, gardening and visiting her daughter Samantha, who currently lives in Chicago.

Asked what she enjoyed most about running her store, Trebilcock described the relationships she made with customers.

“I would say all the people that I’ve met over three decades … interacting with their children, their children’s children. It really has been a wonderful experience.”
