Mornings can be a rush. Most people have to wolf down their daily coffee or tea on their way out the door, or while driving to work or making breakfast for the family. It’s easy and practical, so why not?

But how about a new experience: enjoying your morning caffeine fix mindfully.

That’s become my daily ritual. This is how I do it: I wake up at 5:30 a.m. and make either Earl Grey tea or yerba mate. Everyone is still asleep in my house, so it’s nice and peaceful. I boil the water and slowly pour it into my cup, then I let it steep for three minutes.

That’s three minutes of meditation right there. Use that time to follow your breath in and out of your nose.

Then I hold the cup, letting infuse my hands with warm — and it smells beautiful. As I take my first sip, I feel my lips warming up, and it tastes delicious. I notice the hot infused water in my mouth, and I smile. I am thankful to be enjoying my tea peacefully.

So try it for fun, and start your day off in a mindful way. It will make for a happier morning.
