CHESTERFIELD — A golf course in town is home to a new eatery.

My Mother’s Kitchen and Catering opened at Pine Grove Springs Golf Course early last month. Owner Patrick Searl of Keene said he named the joint as an ode to his mom, Mary Searl, who died when he was 19. Recalling digging for vegetables in the family garden as a boy, he said his mother’s love of homemade meals framed many of his own outlooks on food.

“I remember being told when I was little, you know, that people always need to eat, and they’re always going to prefer somebody else to cook for them,” Searl said. “… I like how food makes others happy, and that’s what my mom tried to do with foods as well.”

Searl has been cooking for most of his life and has worked as a sous-chef at restaurants in Killington, Vt., and Jaffrey, and more recently as the prepared food manager at Walpole Grocery. Last summer, he worked part time at the golf course as a side gig and struck up a conversation with the links owner about taking over the onsite kitchen, which was unused at the time.

“Me and him just started talking about it organically and it just sort of came to be,” he said.

He offers a variety of locally sourced dishes at the restaurant, from light lunches to a rotating dinner menu that samples different cultural tastes. While the restaurant is seasonal and will remain open through October, Searl’s business also caters events, he added.
