The Daley Whipple VFW and Auxiliary in Keene invites all high school and middle school students, whether educated publicly, privately or at home, to enter its Voice of Democracy (VOD) and Patriot’s Pen (PP) essay contests.

The theme for the Voice of Democracy high school audio-essay competition is “Is This the Country the Founders Envisioned?” The Patriot’s Pen essay theme for students in grades 6 through 8 is “What is Patriotism to Me?”

Cash prizes for both contests are awarded at the local post, district and state levels. The Patriot’s Pen state winner competes nationally for a grand prize of $5,000. The national VOD winner receives a $30,000 scholarship. Other national awards range from $500 to $16,000 and include an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., for state winners.

Entries must be received no later than Oct. 31 at Keene VFW Post 799, 459 Winchester St., or mailed to P.O. Box 24, Keene, NH 03431.
