The Keene Family YMCA is set to celebrate those who haven’t let aging slow them down with a five-day open house of free activities for those at least 55 years old during Active Older Adult week, May 20-24.

Participants can select from a variety of activities in aquatics, cycling, cardio and weight machines, personal training and more. There are group exercise classes ranging from yoga, silver strength and aquacise. Classes are designed to meet every level of fitness and ability.

Each day has a specific focus. Monday is “Welcome to the Y.” Any senior can meet with one of the YMCA’s personal trainers for a 20-minute session and assessment. Tuesday features group exercise classes with strength and stability, beginner cycling and silver cardio circuit. Wednesday is “Super Senior Day,” a chance to connect with others. Thursday showcases aquatics-related programs. And the week wraps up Friday, with balance and risk assessment and a fall reduction class. Each day, participants can meet and talk to Y staff and take a guided tour of the building.

“Active Older Adult Week is a way for the Y to show people they can stay physically active and they can have fun doing so. Exercising in groups helps motivate you and offers an opportunity to make new friends,” Peter Sebert, healthy lifestyles director, said in a news release. “We hope Active Older Adult week shows people it’s possible to have fun and lead a more fit, healthy lifestyle.”
