Author Howard Mansfield will speak at the Historical Society of Cheshire County in Keene on Monday, Nov. 8, at 6 p.m. He will read from his new book, “Chasing Eden,” which was released on Oct. 12, and discuss its connection to local history.
The event is offered both in-person and online. In-person capacity is limited to 50 people.
“Chasing Eden” examines several cultures seeking a better life: the Shakers in the twilight of their utopia; the Wampanoags confronting the Pilgrims; the landscape painters who revered wilderness; and 40,000 Africans newly freed from slavery granted 40 acres and a mule, only to be swiftly dispossessed.
Mansfield is the author of nine books about preservation, architecture and history. He and his wife, writer Sy Montgomery, live in Hancock.
To register, go to www.hsccnh.org. Copies of the book will be available for sale and the author will be on hand for questions and autographs.
