Roaming in the reeds

A young American bittern, bearing traces of juvenile down, lurks in the marsh at Dillant-Hopkins Airport in Swanzey. Bitterns, large wading birds related to herons, have successfully produced offspring at this location in recent years, says photographer Kenneth Bergman. The view of the marsh from Airport Road is so far unimpeded by fencing or barriers, allowing many visitors to enjoy the sight of bitterns and other marsh birds, Bergman says.
