An artichoke grows in Roxbury
An artichoke grows in the Rousmanieres garden in Roxbury last month. Jim Rousmaniere, former editor-in-chief of the Keene Sentinel, remembers an article published a few years ago in the Sentinel about a little boy who lived in Keene who asked his parents early in spring whether he could grow some artichokes. Rousmaniere recalls that they told him that conditions here weren’t suitable, but they went ahead and helped him with his plan. In late summer that year, the newspaper carried a photograph of the smiling lad with artichokes in the garden. The photograph here indicates quite clearly that artichokes still are possible in northern New England when the season runs long, Rousmaniere said.
