When it comes to the intersection of innovation and vibrant main street communities, Eversource tries to be at the center.
“New Hampshire's main streets and small business community are the fabric of our state's economy and key to vibrant communities,” says Allison McLean, Eversource NH community relations manager. “Eversource's commitment to community and renewed focus on economic development is ever present in the city of Keene and the surrounding region.”
Eversource is New Hampshire’s largest electric utility, serving more than 500,000 homes and businesses in 211 cities and towns. The company employs 8,000 people across three states.
Among the projects in which Eversource is engaged, the company is working on key upgrades and modernizations in Keene, including a significant reliability project in the downtown area with a complete upgrade to the electrical infrastructure system. This project includes replacing all old underground equipment and modernizing the grid to support economic growth and redevelopment of the city, McLean says.
“We have worked closely with city officials and local businesses to provide safe, reliable and robust power to the area, while at the same time protecting the aesthetics and ambiance of the quintessential downtown with unique and innovative screening, plantings and fencing to hide electrical equipment,” McLean says.
The project, which is expected to be completed this year, will result in power being restored more quickly when outages occur. It’s part of the nearly $370 million Eversource has invested recently in New Hampshire to maintain and upgrade the company’s electric systems.
Being innovative also means coming up with ways to conserve energy. Therefore, the company developed programs to support businesses small and large to help them with energy savings and efficiency.
McLean says the company’s Business Contact Center and Energy Efficiency Team offer many programs and services made especially for small business. The Small Business Energy Solutions program, she says, includes an array of services, such as free energy audits with qualified contractors, cost-sharing projects and energy-cost-savings opportunities for lighting, refrigeration and other business uses.
“Just last year,” she says, “Eversource invested $150,000 in energy-efficiency upgrades for Keene State College’s Pondside Living, Learning, Community Residence Hall, paid by Eversource's New Equipment and Construction energy efficiency program.”
In addition to defraying part of the cost to install highly efficient equipment, she says, participation in the energy-efficiency program will result in long-term savings on the college's electric bills, as well as on maintenance costs.
Eversource officials also make an effort to be a part of the community. McLean says the utility provides community contributions and volunteer efforts to many organizations and non-profits that support the region and the people who live there. This year, the company partnered with organizations such as The Colonial Theatre, The Professional Firefighters of Keene, Arts Alive!, New Hampshire Small Business Development Corporation, Keene YMCA, MAPs Counselling Services and the City of Keene Recreation Department. Eversource has also been recognized as the top contributor to United Way in New Hampshire and as the top U.S. utility for its energy-efficiency programs by the sustainability advocacy organization Ceres.
Additionally, McLean says Eversource is committed to innovative workforce development programs.
“Through its partnership with Manchester Community College and the local IBEW, Eversource’s Electrical Lineworker Certificate Program is training young people right in their own backyards and providing the opportunity to pursue high-paying jobs in New Hampshire,” she says.
McLean says the company is always looking for ways to better serve and empower customers. To that end, the company strives to collaborate with leaders in the region to solve future energy needs of the region, she says.
“Our innovative approach to communicating with our customers, using the platform that best suits their lifestyle, whether over the phone or on social media, is just one example of how we’re doing that,” McLean says. “The company is also innovating as a national leader in energy efficiency. Our energy efficiency programs and efforts to connect our customers to solutions for savings are helping them to save money and protect the planet.”
