If Alexis de Tocqueville were to revisit the United States today after an absence of 175 years, he would soon enough come upon land trusts. These are private non-profit organizations that help citizens with undeveloped land permanently set aside their fields and forests for the public good.

Were it not for these organizations, along with tax laws that favor land conservation, the protection of natural lands would be solely an activity of government or wealthy private interests.
