For all the natural disasters that it has endured and all the hazardous situations that local police have faced over the years, the Monadnock Region is a safe place, situated as it is in a very safe state: New Hampshire, in fact, is periodically cited by a unit of the Congressional Quarterly organization as being the safest state in the nation.

This background came to mind this week when we published a photo of an armored truck — a 16,000-pound vehicle that has the look of something you might see on news dispatches from Afghanistan — that the City Council is considering adding to the Keene police motor pool.
