The public square, the town common, the thousands of parks and plazas throughout the nation, are places that bring people together. Many of us feel some pride in our special places. Perhaps you have taken visitors to the Boston Common or Boston Garden, or to downtown Keene to admire our own small public space, Central Square.

O n my weekly grocery shopping trip last week, I noted a trend. The grocery store is often a good place to catch the mood of the times. Yes, I do listen, shamelessly, to those snips of conversation that take place while assessing the freshness of the fruit or the best buy on bread. Too many boys find manhood in the company of older men who cannot teach them well because they have failed in their own journeys.

On Monday, April 21, Newell Tolman of Keene will run in the 118th Boston Marathon. It will be his 12th consecutive Boston Marathon.
